Corona- Threats and Opportunities

The widespread of corona virus worldwide has spurred fear and worry. The number of infected people and the fatalities are alarming. It is these times that we need to keep our balance between avoiding exposure to the virus and reduce its devastating effects while not ignoring the opportunities this virus offers in developing health awareness, advancement of new technologies and improve our lifestyles. I published over the last few days few mini posts on LinkedIn. I thought it is advantageous to pool them in one post to cover few of these threats and opportunities.

Knowing what to do and not to do

Coping with the corona virus requires balance between mild worry and excessive worry to do the right things and avoid what actions not to do. There is a sweet zone between the extremes.

The Lotus Effect and the Corona Effect

The Lotus Effect refers to the self-cleaning properties of the lotus flower due to the structure of its leaves that make water form easily-running droplets on their surface. These droplets don’t adhere firmly to the leaves’ surfaces and flow easily carrying the dirt with them. These are the times that we need to have a social structure that is self-cleaning not only to halt the spread of the corona virus, but also to clean us from the dirt of bad actions and intentions. We need to clean our minds and bodies from spreading rumors, fake news to blowout fear so that our minds and bodies remain healthy and possess greater immunity to the alarming virus.

The Strangeness of a Paradox

There are certain materials and species found in nature such as the Lotus flower and the wings of butterflies that amaze me with their paradox. Even though these materials and species are extremely hydrophobic (water-hating); yet they are the cleanest because they have the structure and chemicals to make water roll off their surfaces. In the process the running water carries with it dust, bacteria and dirt and make these surfaces self-cleaning. This is what we are experiencing with corona- as much as we hate it water in Sicily is purified and the environment is less polluted. What we hate most may be of much benefit to us. Our worst enemy may show up as our friend. Let us exercise self-cleaning by turning the corona that we hate most as our inspiration for cleaning our bodies and souls from harmful behaviors that benefit no body. Let the disruption of corona virus lead to the creation of new life styles. This is the way to go and it has all to generate from within every one of us.

Corona and the Relations Pyramid

Disruption may turn this pyramid upside down. Instead of bonding we need detachment. Instead of closeness we need separation. The corona virus is turning our understandings upside down. Can we cope with this challenge?

Lean Manufacturing and Blue Ocean Strategy of Self

These are difficult times fighting against the corona virus. This is an enemy that emerged suddenly and confused our minds. One condition for controlling this virus is keeping the environment hygiene. However; more important is keeping us hygienic. This requires that we only do activities that increase the value of keeping protected against the virus by refraining from throwing the wastes of our thoughts, habits and resulting behaviors on others. It is lean self-manufacturing that produces hardly any waste and increases the value of living a healthy life. In emulation of lean manufacturing we need to follow the 5S steps. These are sorting out our habits and behaviors to dispense with the wasteful ones. Nest is setting in order what we need to do. Sweeping is next to map our activities and visualize the value chain. Nest is to standardize our activities to keep them uniform. Last is sustaining and strengthening the good habits and behaviors. This way we may drop many activities such as smoking, making false claims and spreading rumors that weaken the society. A second approach is to apply the Blue Ocean Strategy on what we think, believe and behave. We need to remove or eliminate the bad ones and increase the good ones and be able to create new us

Emerging Social Character

While individual character describes the richness of the character structure of an individual, the social character describes the emotional attitudes common to people in a society. Hit is how people perform under the grinding of a catastrophe or an epidemic such as the one we are experiencing now. The prevailing culture of a society is the emerging result of the interactions among individuals. The character of a society as determined by its tenacity- resistance to break- under extremely unfavorable conditions- is possibly the result of the interactions of the characters of the individuals in that society. The Chinese people proved they have a high tenacity and solid social character. They challenged the outbreak of corona together and worked in harmony to contain the virus. In some societies the social tenacity is questioned because of the acts of some individuals who do acts that are harmful to them and the society. They spread rumors, they expose themselves to unnecessarily to the corona risk, hide their health status and meanwhile carry the risk to others and even to their loved ones or create social hysteria such as that of the emerging toilet tissues . The weakest social group unfortunately determines the overall character of a society.

Turning the Cracks in Our Hearts to Beauty

Two posts aroused my attention back to what we need to do to combat the corona virus. The post by Anne Thornley-Brown, In her post Anne wrote “"I emerged stronger than ever with prayer, peer support, and expert advice". This reminded me of my post in which I defined “creativity as to identify the hidden pearls of harmful traits and find new uses for them”. The big challenge in life s to turn weakness to strength that is greater than the weakness. This is what Nassim Taleb defined as antifragility. The challenge even gets bigger when it comes to broken hearts and how to not only amend them, but make them stronger than they were before becoming broken. The Japanese know well how to turn broken items into objects that are authentic and more attractive than they were before. The cracks in our hearts are what we may repair uniquely, depending on what cracks we have and finding a way to stick the cracked pieces together. This is the highest level of antifragility I can think of. Even if our hearts are broken with spreading corona and its cracking effects, we may piece together the cracks into new and upgraded selves. It is a testing time for us to turn the cracks into golden opportunities. Together we succeed.

Corona Halting Strategies

The World Health Organization published a graph showing that corona is retreating in China, but spreading alarmingly in other countries. I thank Dr. Mohammed A. AlAnsari for sharing the graph. This brought to my mind the strategy that infected trees follow to containing the virus even though trees have no immune system as humans do, Trees do this by a three-pronged strategy. These are: 1- Minimizing the spread of damage to other parts of the infected tree and nearby trees- and by producing chemicals to halt the damage 2- By building new walls so that the trees may confine the damage, and 3- By growing new tissues around the infected zone to overtake further infection What strategies we follow is not different from what trees do. The major difference is that trees follow the recommendation for that serves their common interest. I read in the news today that somebody inflicted with corona escaped his confinement for he felt bored. It is these acts that make the spread of corona easier among humans than it is probably among trees

Indeed! However, I would understand if Javier and his team didn't reach out to the bees that left. Maybe they haven't officially left (deactivated their accounts) or are not willing to respond candidly. What are they going to say, that beBee has failed them? I have stopped posting on Twitter for months now but I still maintain my account there, just in case I need to promote something. It's a sensitive matter and good quality data is hard to come by...

beBee offers what other platforms don't and mostly the exchange of comments between sound minds. As for COVID-19 yes it did to a large scale. I recall last year that any post I published collected more than one thousand views in few hours. Lately, if I get five hundred views a day then I am lucky. But this worry is only pert of this. There are reasons that I don't know. I wonder if beBee would reach to bees who vanished and ask them why they did so. Without data (and you are the king of data) it is a guessing game.

That's true. Many bees have vanished (bee colony collapse disorder?) or at least stopped being active. Perhaps the COVID-19 situation had something to do with it. I don't know. Still, I include beBee on my email signature sometimes as well as on various official presentations (e.g. conferences, webinars, etc.). Just because it's not as populated as a social medium as it used to be, it doesn't mean it's not worth keeping alive. Anyway, if it dies out, there is always a contingency...

You know early on beBee team made us feel at home. The team shared news of progress and covered the in-house activities of beBee. They also shared video on the team's activities. Javier \ud83d\udc1d CR were always presenting commenting and sharing articles and publishing buzzes. Also, the engagement was heightened with distribution of small items such as coffee cups and t-shirts. The discontinuity of these activities alarmed many authors of the possibility that beBee might disappear (goodness no).

I wonder if there was a possibility of a partnership between the two platforms (beBee and Medium). I really like Medium for its collaboration feature, as well as the fact that someone can publish something on a particular publication or by himself (personal brand). However, beBee is better in the social aspect of the stuff published in it and the community spirit it offers. Something to consider...

Simple: we don't. Instead we strive to become more self-sufficient, build communities, and claim responsibility for our actions. Blaming Covid-19 for everything won't do anyone any favors. Let's accept that we had collectively become complacent and deal with the aftermath of our inadequacies. It won't be easy but we'll come out stronger after all this, not to mention more united.

I came across this quote about those in power. It relates to the actions of King Canute trying to show that it was arrogant of anyone to think they could do anything i e holding back the tides. Political power or office gives those who posses it the illusion they can control events. I am just reading your comments and those of Harvey Lloyd and other commenters and I learn how much more I need to learn. Writing an opportunity for learning. I miss this opportunity with less engagement. It is not the number of views because I also realize that all posts have far less views than before. Dear spiritual mentor Fay Vietmeier I may re-phrase your great points here and say corona is like a Satan. It does the same and in the process we must learn that this upside situation need reversion of our thoughts and habits and the need to clean ourselves from the bad things we do. We don't want the Satan of bad habits and thoughts to reside inside us. This will only make us live upside down. Wisdom and clean hearts and minds make the chaos flight.

Thank you my friend again for your elaboration. I have been away for almost two hours thinking about your comments as they are challenging to my mind. I am thinking of the stock market and how it doean't follow a normal distribution, but rather the log-normal distribution where it shows a long tail to the extreme right. Maybe we have a similar case here. Because of the lack of data it is all a guess work.

We need to clean our minds and bodies… This reminds me of a principle found in the Holy Scriptures where we can be “washed … through the Word” (Ephesians 5) A benefit of being in the Word of God is that the Word will be in me … “washing me” Your words made me SMILE: … “What we hate most … may be of much benefit to us.” And … “it has to generate from within every one of us.” …There is the rub…because Many would resist being “washed” by God’s Word Being “washed by the Word” would require desire & cooperation with God’s Spirit … this will produce heart-change (part 1)

Yes, the curve is based on historical experiences being applied to future ideas. What happens we there is no reference point but you need to build a curve. This is when the pressures of gravity of outcome distort the shape. Right now with all the data we have the millions of dollars being spent and lost are based on a curve that has no historical president. So we are bending the curve to extremes. No judgement here but the future will tell us how well we did with a new situation where we created the curve.

The normal curve- the bell curve- is for normal circumstances. For unusual one the curve changes shape. For example,because of the internet and the arrival of self-publishing and downloading of music and movies the bell curve changed to a long-tail distribution. Same here, if masses get worried then the normal curve would shift and different measures should be taken. A question pops up- how distributions and measures correlate? This is an extremely interesting idea.

Interesting comment. I now visualize the corona crisis as the sun and we humans are placed in it. This results in stripping us of the" and in " electrons of worries" and in "When great pressure comes the individual gets forced into each other, stripped of their own worries". Great thinking by Harvey Lloyd. Unusual circumstances call for unusual measures for a while till we get over the crisis and counter-intuitive measures should cease then. You open my mind to anew idea my good friend.

I agree with your inverted pyramid. But as risk and time increase and work against each other we find that the Action portion grows in need substantially. Should we force the more agreeable things above Action to happen or establish a leader and listen? With risk, where time is working against you, it tends to grow risk exponentially, it is most times better to to do anything as long as it moves you away from the risk. By taking time in figuring out the right thing the exponential threat has now already surpassed the wrong thing. There are limits to this thought, of course.

If we look at a hydrogen atom and consider it with stresses it looks and acts according to common physics. Place this same atom at the center of the sun and it gets stripped of its electrons, fuses with other hydrogen atoms under great force. Humans can influence their environment under normal physics. When great pressure comes the individual gets forced into each other, stripped of their own worries. This would be right side of your bell curve. We can avoid this endgame by working through the authoritative measures at the top of your bell curve. Realizing that when the crisis ends the flood of authoritative actions "should" recede. Under authoritative circumstances to end a crisis we need to serve, even if we don't agree. This is counter intuitive. Unfolding events beyond the control of any person or group requires quick and decisive action. Not necessarily well thought out. When a police officer arrives at a scene of aggressive groups, they must access, separate the stimulus from the group through dispersal. While simultaneously dealing with themselves as becoming a stimulus. A smaller scale version of what we are dealing with globally. Compliance in crisis is not an American thing. We typically resist first and not until we have received the crushing gravity of authoritative action do we comply. If for 4 weeks Americans could settle into allowing the captain to drive the boat and then mutiny afterwards, this would be over much sooner. But media grabbing for ratings keep folks to the right of your bell curve through hyperbole, twisted thoughts of data and other high energy emotional epitaphs.

Mass worries is epidemic and enhances the hysteria and chaos. A leader who focuses on the problem might be exposed to widening panic and the problem inflates. However, the original problem is still there and without solving it the worries will keep mounting. That is why I find your comment greatly sensible "This would require us to be counter-intuitive within crisis. We all must survive under authoritative decisions and clean up the mess later. If we single ourselves out for survival we work against the whole". I wonder Harvey Lloyd if you tried to sketch the bell curve as a multidimensional with the introduction of mass worries. It is challenging, but it opens my mind to many new possibilities. The other idea I find interesting is that how you interpreted the pyramid. I am still pondering on your deep thoughts about it.

The chart displaying the bell curve of worry was interesting. I thought "counter-intuitive". Although your bell curve looks at individuals on the slope, when groups get attacked the curve becomes multi-dimensional. In order for the group to sustain the attack they must secure their own worries quickly and then counter-intuitively help others sort theirs. Counter-intuitive, in helping others places your own worries at greater risk. Creating a conundrum within the worry curve. Extrapolate this across a nation and it becomes a self feeding beast of worry and anxiety. We now have two problems. The original problem and each persons self survival perspective. In leadership do you focus on the anxiety or the problem? Although some would say both this would create a chaotic response as each choice would merely upset dispirit groups. Leaders need the focus to assert themselves on the problem while showing groups a path out of the physical issues. Your inverted pyramid would demonstrate that a leader must take the action regardless of the other factors presented. Alexander Hamilton of constitution fame recognized in crisis, action committed by one is stronger than ruling by consensus. Realizing that decisions were coming quicker than consensus could be built. This would require us to be counter-intuitive within crisis. We all must survive under authoritative decisions and clean up the mess later. If we single ourselves out for survival we work against the whole.

Thank you dear Zacharias \ud83d\udc1d Voulgaris. I have edited the post and if you now click on the social relations pyramid it shall take you to the presentation that I wrote on SLideShare in which I mentioned this pyramid the first time. We are in need of social relations. However; the spread of corona has called for social distancing. This is in opposite to human needs. We have two needs working against each other- one to socialize and one to keep social distancing. We are living in a new paradox that emerged because of the virus.
