Emerging Myths

Emerging MythsIt is unfortunate that this buzz disappeared from my profile. I republish it for this reason.

The rapidity of change nowadays is leading to the emergence of new myths. Our world is overwhelmed with volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA world). People find it hard to predict the future or to stand firmly on the moving sands of their living environment. This is coupled with the death of time and distance and people finding little time to search for the facts. This has led to the emergence of previously unknown myths.

People surfing the internet and/or chatting on various social platforms are getting fewer sleeping hours. This has led to the myths that sleeping five hours/day is enough, and it makes no difference sleeping late in the night. These myths negate medical findings that warn sleep deprivation is threatening the health of up to 45% of the global population. People trend to believe them for they lessen their feeling guilty for doing so. It may be enough for one person to share a post of the value of sleeping few hours and be promoted by few fellows on social platforms so that those who are staying late at night may act by sharing the post or tweet rapidly.

The above act is facilitated by people’s tendency to share myths far more than sharing facts. Research finding by MIT has proven such claim. The seeds of myths spread like the seeds of dandelion as they float far away by wind. The research summarized its findings by stating “Untruth diffused farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth in all categories of information.”

The seeds pf myths are spread by wind as dandelion seeds do

There are many emerging myths about the internet such as cyber friendship. There are examples in literature as the one reporting the top 10 myths about the internet. Of interest her is the myth that cyber friends just are good as real life friends. Teens fall in this trap of this myth and give away information to wolves-like friends. These kids risk their reputation and may find themselves paying heavy prices for myths-like friends. The belief in such a myth led to the emergence of what I describe as “reverse bullying” students bullying their teachers.

Myths are subject to feedback effects. This led to the emergence of a new myths such as the best way to counter a cyberbully attack is by fighting back. This isn’t true because we enter into a vicious feedback loop if we do so. Yet; we may follow the advice of a proven myth!

There are many other examples of spreading emerging myths such as travel myths and travel cards, long-tail myths whereby people are given the wrong advice such as searching for long keywords niches, regardless of the possible number of readers.

Please share your knowledge by providing examples of emerging myths that you experienced.

You remind ,of "reverting back to the origin". In your comment you refer to "reverting back to home". Human habits prevail and control what we do whether we are aware of it or not.

Myths are an outcome of our natural human inclination towards being storytellers, it is the perversion of storytelling that is a concern, much more so when digital networks connect that perversion and we as a collective, fail to see this contamination of storytelling. We contaminate story through the iterations the story undergoes as it goes beyond physical circle. No matter how disperse or diluted or damaged the story becomes as it travels beyond our village, going back to the origins of storytelling, brings us back to the origins of community and then ultimately can inform us to give rebirth to the meaning of "home".

Your comment Marisa Fonseca Diniz reminds me of a great article that I read on why rumors and myths spread fast. https://gainweightjournal.com/why-the-fall-of-the-roman-republic-is-a-good-analogy-for-todays-chaotic-time-part-1/ What is amazing is that your comment is my intended idea for my next buzz. I appreciate your evaluation of the post as well. I have just commented on your last buzz and I find it relevant and powerful.

Very good this article @Ali Anani, I do not know in the country you live, but here in Brazil we have noticed a high index of fake news and myths that run wild on social networks. Interestingly, people do not check the source of this news and without realizing it end up spreading myths around the web, which makes people believe everything they read. In fact, there are some myths that have harmed people, such as taking vaccines from diseases previously rooted in the country, where people believe that vaccines were created to kill the population, when in fact the lack of it is killing many people for parents. The suffering of following a myth is far greater than the truth, but in this house the real doesn't always matter to many blind people.

@Oswaldo Enrique Diaz Delgado Oswaldo~ Thank you for your thoughtful … from-the-heart comments… Yes, we are called to live as a “HUMAN OF LIGHT AND BLESSINGS" … or as Jesus Christ said: we are to “be salt & light” … this occurs as we are making our life & our faith journey. We are “transformed by the renewing of our mind” … Our mind is renewed AS we invest time reading His Word (The Holy Bible) … AS we reflect upon His Word, AS we pray … we are being transformed … this is a sowing & reaping process. AS we are being “renewed” … “transformed” … this is witnessed by those who are in our lives … who cross our path (they hear our words … they see our actions … As a “Christ-one” we live out our professed faith being “salt & light” … this (may) will draw people to Christ … who, in turn may seek to know Him for themselves. And so it goes ;~)

@Oswaldo Enrique Diaz Delgado Oswaldo~ You have given me much to ponder: … "Thoughts that join hands that build" … “If communication is the basis of union we are all worthy of participation.” Holding our neighbor we reach the truth and justice "Teachings of God" This resonated because I’m a “heart-to-heart” communicator … I learned this from the Lord ... From the language of the heart and as an instrument of love to others, "I want to see with your eyes feel with your heart and act with your thoughts in the senses called acts of reasoning" Your thoughts are so rich that I’m going to respond in a post (dedicated to you ;~) You’ll have to be patient because I have my mind wrapped around several writings and as we both know: “Wisdom is not hasty” Please try not to say anything too profound till I get some work done ;~) Wishing God's rich wisdom & blessings upon your family, your life and your work ;~) In His Light ~ Fay

You are spot on my friend Manjit to accurately write "myth-making machinery". Yes, it serves the interests of some people to spread myths to reach their goals. The myth may reach a social scale such as implanting the feeling of inferiority complex among nations to give up. Businessmen may do the same to sell more. Myths can have far-reaching effects than we may think of.

Myths about sleep mean there are more hours to exploit by the myth-maker. We need to think far more about the Wizards of Oz that sit behind the curtain operating the myth-making machinery. The irony is that they are exposed to us but the majority show amazing levels of indifference, more conditioned to do what is in the interest of the myth-maker than their own interest - otherwise what explains the rise of contingent workers and allow big money to buy influence in government, while workers get less and work for less on the myth that they are taxed less. If you drop real wages, the benefits of a tax decrease are negated. The benefits of a tax decrease for the 1# is so exponential - just for decades now, the myth-makers continue to have the people's number and exploitation is as high as it ever has been. What is the point of being made aware of this exploitation and assume that it is merely a part of natural life. It is not, it is a manufactured reality and the manufacture of myth is what makes it manufactured.

Jerry, couldn't agree more. In general we develop a solution then attempt to form the facts around the solution. I would imagine this is the new leadership paradigm that is lost on me. Solutions are driven by facts, and when they are not, the long term prospects for sustainability are poor. In the ole' days facts were according to the intellect of the professional/social group you had in your group. Now we have google and many other sources outside the group we use to nurture. Given Google's broad feedback loop it is difficult to parse fact from fiction. One way is measuring the sales pitch from Google, more pitch than substance usually means the solution was designed and now the thin facts are packed around. The days of old when knights were bold......

Dr. Ali, We live in a world where truth is distorted faster than ever before. Instant myths, made possible by thee internet, are part and parcel of this problem. Once we were told that only when we could gaze into another's eye's would we know the truth. Then, a wiser man or woman cautioned that Trust should hinge on behavior over time, not charm. The lack of one-to-one relationship building in person in today's world allows invalid myths to be accepted. And so it goes

@HarveyLloyd (re-post of comment 9-3-19) Harvey~ "listening and learning during tension brings wisdom and understanding, enhancing our full potential" Most insightful ... the inability of to actually listen (tension or not tension) greatly impedes learning ... Good listeners are rare Even more rare: arriving at "wisdom and understanding" The result is wasted capacity/not reaching full potential Harvey Lloyd wrote: #6 Absolutely, tension is a part of life. We can't go from diapers to success without wise counsel. The question is the roll that tension plays in our seeking wise counsel. If tension finds us retreating to silos, diversity of wisdom is lost. If tension helps us develop bridges across silos we can now lead others and yourself to success. Somehow along the evolutionary process we have begun to believe that tension is all due to cause and effect. Tension is a naturally occurring process that neither needs justification or silos of thought. If we take an honest look at our own past, self reflection, we would see that just before each great leep made was chaos of tension and misunderstanding. It's almost as if the tension is a natural teacher or destroyer depending on the perspective we choose to take. Silos and justifications for tend to destroy or narrow our chances for full potential. While listening and learning during tension brings wisdom and understanding, enhancing our full potential.

@AliAnani (9-3-19) re-post of comment) Ali~ you are always stirring-minds ;~) One myth that comes to mind has to do with UFO's ... many stories have emerged around UFO's (way before we were born) I try not to stand on "moving sands" ... rather on the Rock who is Truth (it is written: that Jesus "came from the Father full of grace & truth") My mantra is seek Truth ... and speak Truth This quote reflects the superficial ... moving-sands mindset/of not desiring truth or facts ... just accepting “Untruth diffused farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth in all categories of information.” This quote made me think of another: “If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed.” attributed to Adolf Hitler "untruth" can be misinformation or blatant LIES Wisdom & discernment are required

@AliAnani (re-post of comment) Hi Fay- your examples of old myths reflect the fact that we humans repeat our beliefs in myth in spit of the advancement of sciences on all fronts. When we lack the wisdom of learning and applying it we are bound to be like “repeating fractals” where a human generation is a scale up or down from the previous one. This self-similarity is one example that I find annoying, the least to say. WOW! You have just inspired me with a buzz idea on self-similarity and its popular concept. You make me feel my friend I am standing on a rock. (9-4-19)

@AliAnani (9-4-19 re-post of my comment) Ali~ "iron sharpens iron" ... that mention of "repeating fractals" I have tucked away ;~) I will be most interested to read your thoughts on "self-similarity" ... it reminds me of "sameness" which I referenced in my buzz "Be a student of history" https://www.bebee.com/producer/@fay-vietmeier-pennsylvania/be-a-student-of-history-value-the-lessons-don-t-erase-the-past-199154 ...in the The Giver by Lois Lowry ... "sameness" is what was taught to children in school There are rich lessons to be found in this children’s book (not just for children) about a man-created utopia. The “Elders” in this “perfect” society did not think the citizens should experience “pain” or make “wrong” choices so history was hidden from them (held by the Giver) Also the community was schooled in “sameness” (to drive home THEIR concept of “equality”) A couple things that stayed vividly in my mind after reading this book: … One is that “sameness” is the same mindset of political correctness. …The other is that God was left out of their “perfect world” “Submitting to censorship is to enter the seductive world of The Giver: the world where there are no bad words and no bad deeds. But it is also the world where choice has been taken away and reality distorted. And that is the most dangerous world of all.” —Lois Lowry

@AliAnani (reponded:) Hi Fay- your response is sharp. Towards the end you mentioned this quote by Lois Lowry "The Giver: the world where there are no bad words and no bad deeds. But it is also the world where choice has been taken away and reality distorted." This is a very interesting quote because the emerging of self-organized behaviors comes from within. Among many possible choices, the system emerged is a particular one. The essence then is having many choices So, if choices are taken away this means so self-organizing behavior would be possible. I am working on this idea since I posted my comment. I plan to publish my thoughts within days. (9-4-19)

@AliAnani Ali~to point out that The Giver is about a man created Utopia "reality distorted" is in essence delusion/(meaning believing something is not true / not believing truth) The other point was that in the Utopia: God was left out of their “perfect world” (which to me is also "reality distorted) (9-4-19)

@AliAnani Ali~ I saw on the mind-stirring buzz by David Navarro López "Old values on a new world" ... that "Emerging Myths" was somehow lost or removed or erased.
