Dear ,
I’m Wala’a Etawi, holder of PHD degree in Special Education. I found my passion in the humanitarian field so that I moved from the education sector to it. I am assistant professor at WISE university, I have extensive experience in developing intervention tools and monitoring tools gained from my research and work experience. For my PhD, I designed an early intervention for children with intellectual disability aimed at improving their adaptive behavior such as communication skills, life skills, and social skills. I utilized culturally valid and reliable measuring tools in order to monitor the improvement of the children. Furthermore, while working in Royal Medical Services-Queen Rania Hospital as a special needs specialist, I designed tools to measure children’s improvement. I designed tools to be used not only by staff, but also by family members in order to evaluate progress at home. This experience enhanced my ability to select and design culturally sensitive and valid tools that reflect outcome reliability.
My supervision skills were evident in my role as a clinic focal point at International Medical Corps (IMC). I was responsible of monitoring and evaluating the performance of staff members in Amman clinics and submitting monthly activity reports accordingly. In specific instances, I developed improvement plans when needed and followed up with the implementation and outcome of the plans. This role required a high level of organization skills as well as communication skills with the team.
My communication skills were utilized when providing training to staff members and awareness sessions to community members. As a master trainer, I conducted Caregivers Skills Training to 25 case managers at IMC in order to equip them with the skills needed to provide caregivers of children with intellectual disabilities with the skills needed to support their children at home. Furthermore, I conducted several mental health awareness sessions at community level aimed at reducing the stigma around mental health and promoting seeking mental health services when needed. Such experiences enhanced my ability to deliver specialized knowledge in simple terms accessible to lay audience.
Best,
